Client: McDonald's All American Games
Challenge: To create a distinctive announcement social post for the upcoming All American Games in Houston, departing from previous approaches.
Solution: I introduced a fresh concept that drew inspiration from vintage basketball trading cards as the design layout. The post began with animated trading cards, adding excitement, and then transitioned into video highlights from both the men's and women's games of the previous year, culminating in an image of Houston.
Summary: While I successfully executed what was initially requested by the account team at my agency, it turned out not to align with the client's vision as they were in the process of developing a new visual identity for the All American Games. This led to confusion and back-and-forth discussions among my agency, the client, and another agency. Ultimately, we chose a different direction for branding.
This experience taught me that working with multiple parties can sometimes result in confusion and miscommunication. In the future, I would proactively suggest a meeting with the client to ensure clear communication and avoid such situations. Nevertheless, I take pride in the design I created, even though it wasn't selected, and I look forward to applying the lessons learned in future projects.
My inspiration stemmed from a desire to create designs for McDonald's All American Games (AAG) social posts that harked back to a vintage aesthetic. I wanted to capture the essence of vintage basketball cards while highlighting memorable moments from the games, evoking a sense of nostalgia for our audience.
Even though this particular design wasn't ultimately chosen, the accounts team at my agency was genuinely impressed with the work I produced. They commended me for elevating the quality of the graphics created for AAG, taking them to a new level of creativity and impact.
